B Hotels & Resorts

The Florida Keys are truly a year-round destination. Here at the Banana Bay Resort, you will B greeted with warm sunshine, ocean breezes and welcoming smiles whether you want to visit our waterfront resort in June or January. But if you are considering the possibility of a Fall escape to the Florida Keys, you could be in for a special treat.

The Changing of the Seasons

There are those who say that there are no seasons in South Florida. But just because you’ll find seashells rather than red and yellow scattered on our beaches during a weekend getaway in the Fall, doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy the changing of the seasons.

In fact, many Floridians will tell you that Fall is their favorite time of year.

The weather is, of course, a major factor. According to the folks at Weather Spark, the average high temperature in Marathon, Florida is 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Our average daily low temperature is a comfortable 70 degrees Fahrenheit. (Yes, that is the low.)

Fall for the Florida Keys

On top of the perennial pleasures of Fall in Florida, this year there are even more reasons you may want to consider a vacation in The Florida Keys:

As TravMedia, the travel industry’s only global media network, reports, just down the road from the Banana Bay Resort, a new 60-passenger tram is now transporting visitors along a 2.2-mile span of the historic Old Seven Mile Bridge to Pigeon Key. The bridge, which was the centerpiece of railroad magnate Henry Flagler’s Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad which connected the islands that make up the Keys with each other and with the mainland for the first time more than a hundred years ago, is a popular destination for history lovers as well as recreational enthusiasts. The Old Seven Mile Bridge reopened earlier this year following a major restoration project. That project has been honored by the Society of American Travel Writers honored as one of three global 2022 Phoenix Awards winners.

The Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium recently opened a third coral nursery in The Florida Keys. You can now find a variety of corals, including star and brain, growing in Key Largo, about 50 miles north of Marathon, as well as in Islamorada (about 30 miles north) and Summerland Key (about 22 miles south). reservations. If you are interested in visiting, give them a call at 305-745-2729 for information on tours and to make a reservation.
Our friends at the Dolphin Research Center are now operating on their Fall hours. A visit to the center is always a memorable occasion. You can interact with the dolphins at the facility, learn about the research being conducted and enjoy a variety of activities. The center, which is located just down the road from Banana Bay Resort, is now open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (They are closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.)
You can now get even more out of your visit to The Florida Keys thanks to a new app from the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary, which provides a wealth of information about the sanctuary’s 3,800 square miles of waters surrounding the Keys. The Marine Sanctuary Explorer app, which describes the sanctuary’s numerous marine zones, offers easy-to-read guidelines about allowed activities and delivers real-time information about rules and regulations, is free to download.

Birding is absolutely amazing in The Keys this time of year! As the Florida Rambler explains, “Every fall, the skies over the Florida Keys fill with thousands of birds from hundreds of species heading south for the winter. The migrating birds follow the land as far as it goes, and that includes the narrow strip that is the Florida Keys, often stopping to chow down before heading over water to the Caribbean or Central or South America.”

INSIDER’S TIP: One of the best birding sites in The Florida Keys is Bahia Honda State Park, which is just down the road you’re your comfy, cozy, waterfront accommodations at Banana Bay Resort. Of course, there’s another reason why Floridians love Fall… It tends to be less crowded than during the peak winter travel months. Which means you’ll probably love it at our intimate 59-room resort this time of year, too. If you’d like a little more information, please feel free to call us at 305-743-3500.
